Course Code FAQs

TESU is changing its course codes, for both the courses we offer and courses we designate as transfer equivalencies only. The original course subject codes are staying the same but expanding from 3 numbers to 4 numbers by adding a zero (0) to the end of the vast majority of courses. For example, ENC-101 will become ENC-1010.

There are also approximately 15 courses to which we are adding a 1 to the end instead of a zero (0). These are cases where the courses are sequential in content, for example: Intro to Meteorology and Intro to Meteorology II. These will be clearly identified and the pattern is the same with the course codes expanding from 3 numbers to 4 numbers.

We have found that we need to create additional courses and course numbers in some subject areas, either as course equivalencies or for courses that TESU offers. The simplest way to accomplish this is to expand to four numbers by adding a zero at the end.

No, this is not a change to our primary course numbering system. The numbering system will still be structured so that 100-200 level courses are lower-level undergraduate (UG) courses, 300-400 level courses are UG upper level, 500-900 are graduate (GR) courses. Within the graduate-level category, 800-900 courses are doctoral level. This change will simply expand the existing course numbering system to include the four-digit codes: As of July 1, 2023, 100-200/1000-2000 level courses are lower-level undergraduate (UG) courses, 300-400/3000-4000 level courses are UG upper level and 500-900/5000-9000 are graduate courses. Within the graduate category, 800-900/8000-9000 are generally doctoral-level courses.

No, the course code changes are not reflective of course content changes. Any content changes, if they do occur, are separate and unrelated to our course code change initiative.

No. All courses that are already on your record with 3 number course codes will remain the same. They will continue to show as 3 number course codes on your unofficial and official transcripts and Academic Evaluation. TESU’s student records system recognizes both versions of the course as the same regardless of the course code that appears externally. We will note this coding change on our Key to Transcript to notify your transcript recipients. This is not an uncommon situation in higher education.

Our priority is to change the course codes for courses TESU offers first. We expect to use the new course codes for all courses offered as of our July 2023 term. You will first see the new course codes in Student Self-Service when you are registering for courses. We also plan to change the course codes on the Moodle learning platform, on the web, and in all communications by July 1. However, it is possible that certain Moodle pages or student forms will still contain the old course codes until all the necessary adjustments are made. Using forms or materials with the three number course codes will not cause any issue for you while we work through this process. For all intents and purposes, the course codes are interchangeable. We ask for your patience and understanding as we make this transition.

In addition to the courses we offer, our records system has more than 15,000 courses that we use as equivalencies for transfer courses only. We also need to add the zero (0) to the end of all of these courses. Because of this, it is possible that we will be transitioning to the course codes through fall 2023. No matter how long the equivalency-only course code changes take, all courses and equivalencies will be recognized by our student record systems since the system matches courses internally and not by the external course codes.

When you are registering for courses or planning new courses as of the July 2023 term, you will be presented with the new course codes. You will select the new code that represents the course you want to take. If you are reviewing materials created by TESU that show the former course code with three numbers, such as ENC-101, select the new course code that has a zero (0) at the end, such as ENC-1010. You will still be able to match the courses if there are any questions by the title. Only these four courses below have a fourth number of 1 instead of zero (0).

New Course Code Title
EAS-1311 Introduction to Meteorology
EGM-3211 Thermodynamics
HIS-3061 African-American History
HIS-3561 War and American Society

First, congratulations on being close to finishing your degree. This change will not cause an issue with your graduation. TESU’s student record systems recognize both versions of the course codes as the same regardless of the course code that appears externally. Our system will interpret the courses correctly and they will be treated the same way.

You will not need to have this adjusted to register. No existing planned courses or petitions need to be redone. TESU’s student records system recognizes both versions of the course as the same regardless of the course code that appears externally. The courses will be treated exactly the same way when our system interprets them during registration.

Yes, we will update the military sites with the new course codes in time for you to request TA for the July 2023 term. We will also work with the military to process any payment issues that may arise as a result of the course code changes.

The VA does not maintain a list of TESU courses for cross reference or approval. Any issues with Parent Letters (students taking classes at TESU for another institution) can be addressed if they come up. The same is true with potential issues for Veteran Chapter 31 benefits students who have provided their Academic Evaluation with older course codes to their VA Counselor. TESU advisors are prepared to assist students in explaining the changes and address questions that may arise.
