Information for Students Affected by Hurricane Milton

With Hurricane Milton making landfall, the University is offering accommodations to students affected by the storm.

To help assist our students affected by Milton, the University is offering the following accommodations:

  • Students who are directly impacted by the hurricane and who are currently registered in courses for the Nursing Session 2 July, August, September or October 2024 terms have the option of receiving a free eight-week course extension without mentor approval; or, a 100% tuition credit for their course(s) to a future term. Affected students should submit a Request for Course Extension Form or a Request for Course Withdrawal Form indicating “Hurricane Milton” as the reason for the request. Please note that TECEP exams in these terms cannot be extended, nor credited for tuition after the exam has been taken.
  • Impacted students who are currently on a course extension for the July 2024 term can request a second eight-week extension on their current term at no additional cost.
  • The University will follow the New Jersey State Guidelines for U.S. military students residing in or deployed to the affected region.

Request an Accommodation: Students affected by the hurricane and flooding who need an accommodation should contact the Office of the Registrar by email at registration@tesu.edu or by phone at 609-777-5680.

Accommodation requests should be submitted by Oct. 25. Requests after that date can be accommodated if the student provides documentation of the reason for the late request.

TESU Doctor of Nursing Practice Student Receives Nurses Educational Funds Inc. Scholarship

Jonathan Anotado Gapilango, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student in Thomas Edison State University’s W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing and Health Professions, has been awarded a prestigious $6,000 Jane Eleanor Knox Scholarship from Nurses Educational Funds Inc. (NEF).

“Receiving the NEF Scholarship represents more than a financial accolade, it symbolizes the dedication and passion I have for my profession,” said Gapilango. “It also serves as a testament to my resolve to make a meaningful impact in patient care and reaffirms my belief in the transformative power of education.”

In a congratulatory message to Gapilango, NEF Executive Director Jerelyn Weiss highlighted that the scholarship is awarded to an exceptional doctoral student who illustrates leadership potential and a unique commitment to the nursing profession.

Gapilango’s leadership in oncology and nursing administration has earned him numerous honors, including the Excellence in Oncology Leadership Award from the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Nurse Leader Award, and the March of Dimes Nurse Leader of the Year for New Jersey. Most recently, he was honored among 19 nurse leaders at the New Jersey State Nurses Association’s Diva and Don Gala for his positive influence on the profession.

“Jonathan brings his nurse leadership expertise, dedication to patient care, and collaborative spirit to his coursework and exchanges with our staff and fellow DNP students,” said Ruth Wittmann-Price, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing. “The NEF scholarship is a well-deserved recognition, and it will provide vital financial support as he fulfills his degree requirements. We celebrate his accomplishments and commend him for this latest distinction.”

A resident of Lakewood, N.J., Gapilango came to the United States from the Philippines in 1995. He is currently the Administrative Director of Oncology Performance Measures and Accreditation at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. From 2004 to 2021, he served as the director of the Cancer Center Administration at Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J. Gapilango is also a National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) reviewer as well as an adjunct faculty member at Georgian Court University and the Pinelands School of Practical Nursing, Lakewood, N.J., and Central Philippine University, Iloilo City, Philippines. He is the current president of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) of N.J., the largest subchapter of PNA in the United States.

Gapilango earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Central Philippine University and completed his Master of Science in Nursing from STI West Negros University in the Philippines. He holds credentials as an Oncology Certified Nurse, Certified Clinical Research Professional, and Nurse Executive Certification. In tandem with his DNP coursework, he is concurrently enrolled in the School’s Nurse Preceptor Certificate Program.
