Nurses Serving Nursing

Providing Personalized Advising and Student Services

Personalized, nurse-to-nurse advising is one of the hallmarks of the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing. Most of the students enrolled in nursing programs at Thomas Edison State University are RNs who work full time in a variety of healthcare settings around the country and have more than 20 years of nursing experience. Our students receive specialized services from experienced nurses who understand the demands of working nurses and the important role that education plays in the nursing profession.

Our nurse advisors work closely with nursing students to create degree completion plans for the BS in Nursing (RN-BSN) program, prepare to take online nursing courses, identify credit-by-exam programs that can be used to fulfill general education requirements and create program plans to earn the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. All students are encouraged to schedule an advising appointment early in their program.

Mentors guide students through the online courses, facilitate online discussions and grade assignments. Mentors for online nursing courses are experienced nurse educators from bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral nursing programs and service settings from throughout the country who may also serve on an as-needed basis to fulfill many of the other roles traditionally held by nurse faculty in campus-based programs.

Goals of the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing:

  • prepare graduates to assume leadership roles in a diverse society and changing healthcare environment
  • provide nontraditional nursing education programs that meet the needs of adult learners
  • provide a foundation for advanced study and lifelong learning
