Academic Advising at Thomas Edison State University is a teaching and learning, student-center partnership which is integral to a successful student experience. Our advisors assist students with reviewing their academic evaluation, selecting courses and programs of study, interpreting University policies and prepare for academic goal attainment. We are dedicated to the important process of empowering our students by making informed decisions to assume responsibility for their educational goals and academic performance. Provide accurate and timely information concerning TESU policies and procedures and where to access vital information pertaining to academics. Attend academic advising appointments prepared. Have access to a writing utensil, notepad and your academic evaluation before the advising session. Be familiar with academic policies and deadlines. Schedule advising appointments via telephone by calling (609) 292-2803 (M-F, 10-4PM) or online using the Appointment Scheduler.
Be knowledgeable about the program for which you are advising. Interpret academic program requirements including general education, area of study and Capstone items. Actively participate in the advising process. Concisely and directly communicate academic goals and foreseeable challenges. Your Academic Evaluation can be accessed via the University's student services portal, Online Student Services. Once you are logged in, you will find the link listed under the heading "Academic Profile."
Secure personal student information/records and heed the regulations of the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Check your TESU student email regularly in order to review important account information sent on behalf of the institution. To access your student email, log in to the University portal (my.tesu.edu). Look along the bottom left side where you will see a block called "My unread messages." Click the link inside of this block, and a new window will open, taking you to your TESU email account.
Assist in the creation of goals and objectives in observance of registration dates and deadlines, financial and residency requirements and other determining policies. Review the academic calendar in order to identify important dates and deadlines. Understand how to access Online Student Services in order to ensure that there are no financial holds on your student account. Access the undergraduate academic calendar or the graduate academic calendar.
Partner with students when developing education plans that match abilities and personal/professional interests. Utilize web-based resources and the Expressline when confronted with questions, concerns or issues pertaining to your student account. Students can call the Advising Expressline at (609) 777-5680 (Mon-Fri 11-1PM ET), to reach an academic advisor quickly without the need for a formal appointment.
