Thomas Edison State College was established by the New Jersey Board of Higher Education on July 1, 1972 and was established as a State College in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 64 of Title 18A on May 18th 1973. Thomas Edison State College was renamed Thomas Edison State University on December 21, 2015 and continues to operate as a licensed New Jersey higher education institution under the provisions of the NEW JERSEY ADMINISTRATIVE CODE, TITLE 9A:1-1.3(e).

The accreditation does not include individual education courses that the EPP offers to P-12 educators for professional development, relicensure or other purposes.
