PSY-3790 Social Psychology

The goal of social psychology is to understand and explain how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the real, imagined, and implied presence of other people. A core tenet of social psychology is the acknowledgment that people are highly influenced by social situations and that how we act, feel, and think is not solely a byproduct of our personalities. This course provides students with an overview of research and theories in social psychology, focusing on scientific approaches to the study of social behavior. It aims to teach students how to understand, appreciate, and criticize an empirical study in social psychology. The course emphasizes an understanding of the important scientific methods, findings, and principles in the field of social psychology, which it then applies to everyday life and to broader social problems.

PSY-3600 Organizational Theory

Organizational Theory explores organizational structures, processes, and outcomes. The approach to these issues is primarily analytical and theoretical. Specific concerns are presented within the context of the nature and types of organizations, organizational processes and environments, and organizational effectiveness. Students will also examine the history of organizational theory through the words and ideas of master theorists.

Advisory: This is an upper-level course. Students should have knowledge equivalent to an introductory psychology course.

PSY-3630 Industrial Psychology

Industrial Psychology emphasizes the application of psychological theories and research to staffing and development functions.

Advisory: It is advisable to have knowledge in a course equivalent to PSY-1010: Introduction to Psychology or SOC-1010: Introduction to Sociology with a grade of C or better to succeed in this course. Students are responsible for making sure that they have the necessary knowledge.

PSY-2700 Psychology of Gender

This course introduces students to the psychological literature on gender, including the biological, psychological, and social factors associated with gender differences and similarities in affect, behavior, and cognition. The social construction of gender, with respect to social context and time period, is explored in terms of social theory and schema development. More specifically, the course covers the influence of gender roles on psychological health, interpersonal relationships, and experiences in social settings. Readings and assignments focus on the application of gender theories and research, including portrayals of gender in the media and gender-related issues, such as sexual harassment, toxic masculinity, violence, and the wage gap. Readings and assignments include definitions of gender, including gender identity and expression beyond the gender binary. Students will be expected to learn the terminology, research, and theory discussed in the readings and gain a greater understanding of applied research methods.
