Leadership Through Governance: The Role of Nonprofit Boards

Leadership through Governance is an online, noncredit course that examines the nature of nonprofit boards and the value that they can provide to the organizations that they lead. The course seeks to provide an understanding of the many roles played by various parts of the organization, and how the board fits into this structure. To that end, we want to be clear about the differences between responsibilities and functions, particularly as the tension between the two impacts the effectiveness of the organizational management model in place.

Practical applications such as board selection and maintenance, CEO/Executive Director Evaluation and compensation, and board involvement in fundraising efforts are highlighted. Additionally, a working model of what might be implemented in the student’s ‘home’ organization is then presented for consideration by the class. Students from all types of nonprofit organizations stand to benefit from the course – from the most informal neighborhood association to mid-size and larger groups.

Who should register for this course?
The course is particularly relevant for individuals who are beginning their board term as well as those who are considering rendering such service. As well, those in nonprofit management roles, from executive directors to department directors, would benefit from a greater understanding of the role the board has to play.

Tuition: $375

Refunds and Transfers:
If a course for which a student has registered has not yet begun, he/she will usually be allowed to transfer the registration to another course. However, if the student has been sent any materials for the original course, or had other expenses incurred on his behalf, he/she is responsible for the cost of such materials. Students seeking to transfer courses should contact spcs@tesc.edu. If there is a difference in tuition between the two courses, the student will either be given a partial refund or asked to pay the balance.

Refunds are not typically granted once a course has begun. Exceptions are sometimes made in cases of extreme emergency and are handled on a case-by-case basis. Students requesting a refund should email their request to spcs@tesc.edu.
