The Construction Management Certificate Program is a series of six not-for-credit courses designed to meet the construction industry’s continuing need for well-trained individuals with practical experience to lead and coordinate a wide range of construction projects. The competencies developed in this program are especially important as the construction management field has become increasing fragmented by subcontractors, sub-consultants, multiple-owner entities and a reliance on technical tools rather than effective communication. Moreover, the program’s practical focus provides graduates with a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
To remain competitive in the global business environment, construction professionals must understand the language inside the trailer as well as in the office of the owner, architect, general contractor and construction manager. The ability to coordinate the range of highly technical sub-trades and their respective design professionals, all the while working with an understanding of the unique perspective of public officials (inspectors and building department officials), requires a strong grounding in the common tools of the construction management professional. From requests for information and submission of bids, to proper procedures for initiating and executing change orders, pay applications and lien waivers, the construction process can be both complex and exacting, daunting to anyone other than the well-trained individual.
Preparing for a leadership role outside the trades requires attention to a specialized jargon and approach to managing materials, staff and equipment. Project scheduling and budgeting tasks, for example, have an impact on project performance and can drive decision-making in the field. For this reason, the trained construction manager must bring to bear a complete understanding of the level of integration of project processes and decision-making protocols within organizations and across the profession.
The Construction Management Certificate Program facilitates the ability to analyze construction project problems, then seek and find the appropriate solution. Concurrently, the professional construction manager must effectively communicate the challenges, time and cost impacts related to any of the processes inherent in achieving the desired outcomes so as to maximize the benefit to the stakeholders. Oftentimes, this requires not only exposure to the most current software trends and tools, but to enhanced communication strategies.
Who Is the Program For?
The primary focus for this certificate program is the construction tradesperson, field supervisor, procurement specialist, vendor and construction administrative professional seeking to become a Construction Project Manager and even the owner of a construction company down the line. Graduates may also seek such targeted construction management roles as: Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Coordinator, Scheduling Assistant and General Superintendent. Of course, some graduates may choose to utilize the knowledge acquired in the program on their own building projects.
Participants are guided through the process of evaluating and mitigating construction problems while executing projects on time, at or under budget, and according to all applicable quality standards. With knowledge gained in this program, the student will be able to validate the relevant construction processes that are in place on just about any project. Upon completion of The Construction Management Certificate Program, students will be familiar with:
- working with construction documents and specifications
- interacting with and managing routine commercial construction transactional communications from Architects, contractors, subcontractors and construction managers
- identifying risks associated with work scope changes
- identifying schedule challenges and establishing schedule recovery plans
- coordinating the implementation of a quality control and quality assurance program on a construction job site
- estimating the costs of construction as required by bid documents or for change orders
- selecting the right construction project management technique(s) for the task(s) at hand
