Options for Course Completion Due to Deployment

The state of New Jersey expanded support to service members under Legislation Bill S-278 by defining the options for these students at public institutions of higher education who are unable to complete a course due to deployment, mobilization, reassignment, or other military obligation.

As a result of this legislation, TESU students who are service members called to partial or full mobilization, reassignment, or other military obligation and have completed at least eight weeks of attendance in a course may choose to: (1) receive a letter grade; (2) receive a grade of credit (pass) or no credit (fail) based on assignments due through the point of notification to the university of military obligation; (3) receive a grade of incomplete; (4) withdraw.

Exceptions: Students in clinical courses who have not completed required clinical hours may withdraw, receive a grade of fail, or an incomplete. However, nursing students will have to repeat the clinical course.

Due to the cumulative and culminating nature of the capstone experience, students must complete the final project to receive a grade or pass/fail. If they are not able to complete the final project due to military deployment, they may choose to receive a grade of incomplete, a course extension with a waiver of the extension fee, or they may withdraw.

Service members who have completed less than eight weeks of attendance may choose to: (1) receive a grade of incomplete, or (2) withdraw.

If service members who accept a grade of credit or no credit receive a letter grade for the course by completing the work required within one year after returning, the letter grade shall replace the credit or no credit grade.

A service member who chooses to withdraw from a course shall receive a full refund of tuition and fees attributable to that course.

A student who is a service member will not be charged a late fee for registration upon the student’s return from deployment, mobilization, reassignment, or other military obligation.
