AAS Degree, Polysomnography

The Associate Applied Science (AAS) degree with an area of study in Polysomnography enables mid-career adults to meet their educational and professional needs through credit transfer and course completion. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The program is also approved by the New Jersey State Board of Polysomnography. Graduates of the program meet the requirements for licensure/certification in the State of New Jersey. Candidates for the AAS in Polysomnography and Certificate in Polysomnography are required to complete two clinical experiences in addition to online courses. Candidates already possessing a Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) license are not required to complete clinical courses.

Thomas Edison State University developed its Polysomnography program with sleep medicine professionals from Capital Health’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Hamilton Township, NJ, which is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

If you are unable to complete your clinical experiences in the State New Jersey and do not expect to work in New Jersey after you complete the program, please check the directory for your state’s licensing requirements.

Candidates not residing near clinical partnership locations will be required to arrange their accredited PSG clinical experience at a site near their home. If a clinical site cannot be located or an agreement cannot be secured students will not be able to complete this program.

Polysomnography Clinical Compliance

Students in the AAS degree with an area of study in Polysomnography and Undergraduate Certificate in Polysomnography must meet clinical compliance requirements prior to starting their clinical courses; Clinical Fundamentals of Polysomnography (PSG-200) and Therapeutic Interventions and Patient Management (PSG-105). Learners who have a Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) credential will receive credits for these courses and do not have to complete the clinical courses and compliance requirements. Clinical compliance requirements for students include, but are not limited to, American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) for health providers instruction, a drug screen, proof of immunity or immunization for all vaccine-preventable diseases and professional liability and major medical health insurance coverage. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and completion of a criminal background check are also required. Affiliated agencies and facilities have the right to preclude students who do not have a clear criminal background check. This may result in the inability to complete clinical requirements and complete the program. Students are encouraged to start completion of the clinical compliance process 3 months prior to the date when they would like to enroll in PSG-200 or PSG-105. Students are encouraged to complete all general education courses prior to starting the polysomnography requirements. Students should work closely with their Academic Advisor before registering for any courses.

PSG-101: Theoretical Fundamentals of Polysomnography

  • Course could be an elective for other allied health programs

PSG-102: PSG Instrumentation Theory

  • Required completion of, or enrolled in, PSG-101

PSG-103: PSG Scoring

  • Required completion of PSG-200 or experience as a Registered Polysomnography Technologist
  • All clinical compliances described above, and detailed in the clinical manual, must be completed prior to starting the course.

PSG-104: Sleep Disorders

  • Course could be an elective for other allied health programs

PSG-105: Therapeutic Interventions and Clinical Patient Management

  • Required completion of PSG-200
  • All clinical compliances described above, and detailed in the clinical manual, must be completed prior to starting the course.
  • Additional laboratory fee charged for this course
  • Offered in October and January semesters

PSG-200: Clinical Fundamentals of Polysomnography

  • Required completion of APS-100, BIO-211, BIO-212, PSG-101, and PSG-102, or equivalent experience in Polysomnography
  • All clinical compliances described above, and detailed in the clinical manual, must be completed prior to starting the course.
  • Requires prearrangement of accredited clinical site that has contracted with TESU of clinical phase prior to registering
  • Additional laboratory fee charged for this course
  • Offered in October and January semesters

PSG-295: Polysomnography Capstone

  • Required completion of all general education courses (21 credits) and all polysomnography course requirements
  • Can be taken while enrolled in PSG-103

Notes: Non-Registered Polysomnography Technologist required completing clinical courses of (PSG-200) Clinical Fundamentals of Polysomnography and (PSG-105) Therapeutic Interventions & Clinical Patient Management MUST arrange for local clinical phase site on enrollment. Clinical sites MUST be accredited and willing to contract with Thomas Edison State University to ensure clinical experiences achieve program requirement as indicated by CAAHEP. Learner will pay an additional laboratory fee for (PSG-200) Clinical Fundamentals of Polysomnography and (PSG-105) Therapeutic Interventions and Clinical Patient Management.
