Enrollment Verification

University Enrollment Definition

Thomas Edison State University’s Enrolled Student policy is to be used when verifying student enrollment status for employers, career services and similar inquirers. Thomas Edison State University considers students enrolled as of the 10th day of a term in which the student enrolls in a TESU credit earning option. The tuition payment covers a period of one year of service. Students who are enrolled with the University may choose to complete their degree requirements at TESU or by assessment or transfer credits or through a combination of both methods. Even if students are not taking courses at TESU, they are considered enrolled in the University if they meet the criteria listed above. This enrollment definition is not to be used for purposes of Federal Title IV program administration.

Requests for University enrollment verifications for non-Federal Title IV program administration purposes should be directed to:

Enrollment Reporting to the National Student Clearinghouse

Thomas Edison State University reports student enrollment to the National Student Clearinghouse for purposes of Federal Title IV program administration. For Federal Title IV program purposes only, the University reports enrollment status of full-time, part-time, or less than half-time to the National Student Clearinghouse using the prescribed definition based on the number of TESU Online or Guided Study credits being taken at any given time. This definition should be used for the inquirers needing enrollment status for Title IV program purposes only, such as student loan deferment. These enrollment verifications and deferment requests are to be submitted to the deferment drop box directed to this link for upload.

To be eligible for loan deferment, students must be enrolled in at least 6 UG credits or 3 GR credits (half time) per term taking Thomas Edison State University Guided Study and/or online courses. All courses must be approved by an academic advisor and applied to the degree program being pursued to qualify for a deferment. Enrollment in online and Guided Study courses are reported to the National Student Clearinghouse 15-20 days after the start of the term. Registration or enrollment in TECEP® examinations, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and e-Pack® courses are not reported to the National Student Clearinghouse nor do they qualify a student for loan deferment.

Please note that for undergraduate nursing students, enrollment status is determined as a sum of the number of credits in all online courses in which students are enrolled in the full term, over both sessions. For example, a student who is in one 3 credit online course in Session 1 and one 3 credit online course in Session 2 is enrolled in a total of 6 credits and will be reported at half time. If a student drops a course in either session, the enrollment status will be reported retroactively as less than half time as of the drop/withdrawal date. Only online courses count toward the calculations. Neither TECEP nor PLA courses count toward credits for Financial Aid or Enrollment Reporting calculations.

Undergraduate programs (Bachelor’s, Associate’s and Undergraduate Certificate programs) (Online and Guided Study courses only per term)

  • 12 credits = Full time status
  • 9 credits = Quarter time status
  • 6 credits = Half time status
  • 5 credits and below = Less than half time status

Graduate programs (Online courses only)

  • 6 credits = Full time status
  • 3 credits = Half time status

If you were sent or have requested a deferment form, you must upload the completed deferment form to the Office of the Registrar by completing this form, where it will be reviewed and forwarded to the National Student Clearinghouse for processing. Do NOT send the form to the National Student Clearinghouse yourself, it must go through the Office of the Registrar first. Before presenting it to TESU, you must complete Section 1 and the fields titled Borrower's Signature, Date and where to send the completed deferment request. If you do not enter your loan holder or servicer’s name, your form can not be processed.

Processing time can take 3-5 business days if you are a current student in an active term. Please see credit and status requirements above.

Attend an Information Session

Information Sessions are held throughout the year and provide prospective students with the opportunity to meet University staff and learn more about the admissions process, financial aid, enrolling and what it is like taking an online course.

No, course extensions do not continue a student’s eligibility for loan deferment. Students are not eligible for student loan deferments after the original term ending date even if the student has been approved for an extension on the course. Course extensions are much like incomplete grades at other schools in that they provide the student with additional time to complete course requirements.

Students for whom the National Student Clearinghouse report “no enrollment information is available” are either not enrolled at Thomas Edison State University or may be enrolled at the University for courses in which the methods of earning credit do not entitle the student to loan deferment, such as TECEP® examinations, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and e-Pack® courses. In these cases, neither the University nor the National Student Clearinghouse is able to complete deferment verification forms since these methods of earning credit do not entitle the student to loan deferment.
